Woman fatally struck by train in Hanahan early Thursday
A woman was fatally struck by a freight train early this morning in Hanahan.
The woman was standing on the tracks near Hanahan Road when she was hit by a northbound train at 3:05 a.m., according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.
Salisbury said the woman died of “massive” body and head trauma.
Lt. Michael Fowler, spokesman for the Hanahan Police Department, said the black woman has not been identified and that investigators were using fingerprints to find out who she is.
The case is being investigated as a possible suicide, he added. The woman would have had to walk off the main road to get to the tracks in the area.
“All we know is what the engineer told us,” Fowler said. “She was standing in the middle of the tracks with her hands in her pockets, just waiting for the train.”
