Allan Park renovation under way, volunteers wanted
The transformation of a downtown park has begun.
The barren grounds of Allan Park could be covered with 1,000 new plants by Sunday. Staff and volunteers with the Charleston Parks Conservancy are putting down 200 of them today. They’re hoping some more volunteers will come by and help with the rest.
The park on Ashley Avenue is the centerpiece of the Hampton Park Terrace neighorhood. It’s bordered by big oak trees, with a white fountain in the middle. But the ground has become barren since the park was built in the 1920s.
The neighborhood association has raised $12,585 of the $15,000 needed for the first phase of the renovation. The Parks Conservancy has been working with the association on the project.
Other people are also kicking in to help. Patrons at Moe’s Tavern at 714 Rutledge Ave. can donate a minimum of $1 to be entered into a drawing for prizes. The winners will be announced at 9 p.m. Wednesday, following an Allan Park Night starting at 5 p.m. Proceeds from the sales of a special plated dinner and beer from Sweetwater Brewing Co. will be donated to the park.
