House Democrat James Smith asks committee to reopen Haley ethics case
COLUMBIA – A state representative is asking a legislative panel to reconsider its decision dropping ethics charges against South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
Rep. James Smith’s office said Tuesday that the Columbia Democrat had filed a House resolution asking the Ethics Committee to reopen its probe.
Earlier this month, the committee voted to dismiss allegations into whether Haley violated ethics rules while representing Lexington County in the House before being elected governor in 2010. Members voted that there was good reason to look further into the charges, then quickly voted to dismiss them anyway.
A Republican activist who brought the original complaint has asked the full House to reconsider the case, but that chamber has taken no official action.
A Haley spokesman didn’t immediately comment on Smith’s resolution.
