A speeding motorcyclist crashed after a sheriff’s deputy tried to stop him Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 17 near Awendaw.
Frank Baughn, 32, of North Charleston, is expected to be charged with first-offense driving under suspension and reckless driving, according to Maj. Jim Brady of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
He suffered a broken ankle in the wreck and was hospitalized, Brady said. He had not been booked into the county jail as of late this morning.
The incident happened about 1:15 p.m. near the Kick’n Horse Saloon at 5105 N. Highway 17, A deputy in a patrol car spotted a motorcycle speeding by him on the opposite side of the road. The deputy planned to stop the motorcyclist for speeding, but there was no vehicle chase, Brady said.
“The deputy turned around,” Brady said. “But the motorcycle took off, and by the time the deputy got up to him, he had already wrecked.”
The motorcyclist tried to run away on foot, but he was caught after a short pursuit, Brady said. Paramedics were called to examine the man, who was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
