Chipotle Mexican Grill opened its first Charleston area restaurant today in time for lunch.
The restaurant is at 7398 Rivers Ave., Suite 102, North Charleston. It will be open seven days a week.
Officials are scouring the Mount Pleasant area for a second location, a company spokeswoman said.
Though no official announcement has been made, a company official earlier this year said one is planned near Mount Pleasant Towne Centre and is tentatively set to open in November.
The Denver-based chain said it has a compact but flexible menu that includes burritos, tacos and salads.
Before today, Chipotle had four South Carolina restaurants in Columbia, Greenville and Spartanburg.
The company is in an expansion mode. It said it opened 32 new restaurants in the first quarter of this year, bringing the total to 1,262.
During that same period, the chain posted a 13 percent jump in sales at restaurants that are at least a year old.
Total first-quarter sales for all locations was $640.6 million, 26 percent higher. And Chipotle’s profit for the three-month period jumped 35 percent to $62.7 million.
