RiverDogs top West Virginia in 10 innings

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A bases-loaded walk by Francisco Arcia gave the Charleston RiverDogs the lead in the 10th inning as they defeated the West Virginia Power, 8-4, in South Atlantic League baseball with 3,035 in attendance on Friday night.

The victory by the first-place RiverDogs (23-9), coupled with a loss by the Savannah Sand Gnats, resulted in Charleston stretching its lead in the Southern Division to three games.

With the score tied at 4 after nine, the RiverDogs got two leadoff singles and a walk against Orlando Castro. Arcia worked a walk to break the tie, and Charleston added three more runs on a sacrifice fly by Angelo Gumbs and RBI singles by Cito Culver and Tyler Austin.

Ben Paullus finished the game with a scoreless 10th inning.

West Virginia (11-23) had tied the game with a three-run rally in the ninth. Carlos Mesa hit a bases-loaded double to tie the game, but outfielder Ali Castillo cut down the potential winning run at the plate to force extra innings.

Kelvin DeLeon was 3 for 4 with an RBI for Charleston, while Dante Bichette Jr. added a pair of hits. Culver and Arcia had two RBIs each.

The teams will face off at 7:05 p.m. today. Right-hander Bryan Mitchell (2-2, 3.28 ERA) will get the start for the RiverDogs, and left-hander Zac Fuesser (0-0, 3.12 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for West Virginia.
