Wando track standout Lucy Rummler heads up list of Optimist Club award winners

Lucy Rummler, a School of the Arts student who competes for Wando High School, was named 2012 Optimist Club’s female athlete of the year.

Rummler was a member of the cross country team that won the Class AAAA state title in the fall. She also runs track and is expected to earn all-state status and help the Warriors contend for the title this weekend at Spring Valley High School.

Tinsley Hallman of Wando is first runner-up and Sarah Montei of Summerville is the second runner-up.

The Optimist volleyball team includes Erin Coutenay, Wando; Litsa Darby, Ashley Hall; Jessica Graham, Ashley Hall; Ellie James, Bishop England; Hallman, Wando; and Julia McAvoy, Porter Gaud. Ashley Heidtke of Porter-Gaud is the volleyball coach of the year.

The Optimist basketball team includes Tiffany Addison, Stratford; N’Dea Bryant, Goose Creek; Amber Campbell, Northwood Academy; Dekeiya Cohen, West Ashley; and Hallman, Wando. Paul Runey of Bishop England is the basketball coach of the year.

The Optimist track and field team includes Michelle Lussier, Bishop England; Georgia Compton, Wando; RoShani Glover, Summerville; and Angelica Collins, Wando.

David Lee of James Island is the coach of the year.

Region 7-AAAA stars
Region 7-AAAA baseball champion Wando landed four players on the all-conference team: Jake McBreairty, Babe Thomas, Daniel Willett and John Eysen.

Wando’s Dirk Thomas is coach of the year.

James Island’s picks include Josh Escoffier, Robert Polk and Cody Hobbs.

Goose Creek’s selections include Zach Lavery, Dalton Franke and Cody Smith.

West Ashley’s picks are Matthew Cooper, Nick Glover and Zach Stello.

Daniel Huskey and Jordan Lacavera of Stratford round out the team.

Wando also won the softball championship and placed four players on the all-region team. They are Danica Newton, Nicole Pellegrini. Emily Stafford and Brooke Gibert.

Wando’s Steve Legette is coach of the year.

Stratford’s selections include Megan Johnson, Magan Thrower and Caroline Gilbert.

Kali Watkins, Brittan Miller and Miranda Phillips are James Island’s selections.

Bailey Craven and Ashlyn Ryan of Goose Creek and Shelby Rodgers and Ashlyn Jordan of West Ashley round out the team.

State golf
The High School League’s state golf championships will be held Monday and Tuesday.

The Class AA match will be held at The Indian River Course in West Columbia. Pelion is the host school.

The Class AAA match will be held at the Hackler Course on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. North Myrtle Beach is the host school.

The Class AAAA championships will be contested at Furman University. Mauldin is the host school.
