Video of fatal Charleston County wreck released
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office released dash-cam video today of a single-vehicle crash this week that claimed two people’s lives.
The car had fled from a sheriff’s deputy minutes earlier, authorities said.
The wreck happened about 11:55 p.m. Tuesday on Camp Road near Dills Bluff Road. Both occupants of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala — Toland Gathers, 35, and Shahied Ladson, 34, both of Charleston — later died of their injuries.
The car was northbound on Camp Road when its driver lost control, according to Cpl. Bob Beres of the S.C. Highway Patrol. The Chevrolet went off the road and struck a tree, Beres said.
Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seat belt, he added.
Maj. Jim Brady, a spokesman with the Sheriff’s Office, said a deputy first spotted the car at 11:52 p.m. at the Blue Water gas station at 772 Folly Road, where it crossed several lanes of traffic when turning onto Folly Road.
When the car turned onto Camp Road, the deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the car fled. It went off the road after failing to make the curve at Dills Bluff Road.
Brady said more than 7 grams of cocaine and other drugs were found in the car and on the bodies at the hospital.
Both Gathers and Ladson had lengthy criminal histories.
