College of Charleston basketball coach Byington accepts Virginia Tech position

College of Charleston assistant Mark Byington is leaving the school for a coaching position on the Virginia Tech staff after spending nine seasons with the Cougars. Staff/file

Mark Byington, who was the College of Charleston men’s interim head basketball coach for the final two months of the 2011-12 season, is joining new Virginia Tech coach James Johnson’s staff, a Virginia television station is reporting.

Byington and Johnson were both assistants at the College of Charleston under former coach Tom Herrion.

Byington, who confirmed last week that he was talking with Virginia Tech officials, will be joined by former VMI player Ramon Williams on Johnson’s staff. The WDBJ7 also reported that Navy associate head coach Kurt Kanaskie is expected to fill out Johnson’s staff.

Johnson was an assistant at Virginia Tech and left for a job at Clemson, but was rehired by Virginia Tech when the school fired Seth Greenberg.

Byington, 38, spent nine seasons at the College of Charleston under Herrion and Bobby Cremins and was one of the finalists to replace Cremins, who retired March 19. Byington replaced Cremins on the bench when Cremins took a leave of absence on Jan. 27, citing exhaustion.
