Youth sports: Names and games
Nine participants from the Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run local competition held at St. Andrew’s Parks and Playground on April 28 advanced to Saturday’sSectional Competition in North Charleston.
All-around age group champions and individual winners from the local level in pitching, hitting and running events are eligible to compete in the next round.
In the local boys age 7-8 category, Austin Gallman was the all-around champion, and he also won the pitching competition.
Brooks Winer was the hitting champion, and Aiden Roff won the running event to advance to the sectional level.
The boys 9-10 local champion was Chance Sullivan, who also won the individual hitting competition. Sullivan tied with Bryce Morris and Anthony Doscher for first place in the pitching event. All three advance to the sectional, along with running champion Phillip Boris.
Geoffrey Gilbert swept the boys 11-12 competition, winning all three individual events and the all-around title.
In the girls 11-12 category, Vanessa Echevarria also swept the individual events en route to the all-around championship.
The sectional competition begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Collins Park.
Track meet in June
The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department is hosting the annual Hershey’s Track and Field Games State Meet on June 9 at the Park West track.
The meet begins at 9:30 a.m. and is open to the public.
The state meet will host district winners from the May 19 district tournament in West Ashley, along with winners from districts across the state.
The event marks the seventh consecutive year that the MPRD has hosted the state championship, which this year will draw more than 300 athletes from four districts in South Carolina.
There will be three age divisions ranging from 9-14, and events will include the long jump, softball throw, 4x100-meter relay and 50-meter through 1600-meter runs.
Winners at the state meet will have the chance to ultimately compete in the North American Final Meet, held in Hershey, Pa.
The JCC boys lost their season-opening game, but went on to win their next 10 and capture the 9-10 age division in St. Andrews Parks and Playgrounds baseball.
The team, coached by Eric Morton, won the postseason title while Ja’Cori Morton and Josh Edge were selected as all-star representatives.
The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department’s Hurricanes completed an unbeaten season with nine wins and two ties to capture the SCYSA U9 Boys Division 3 championship for the spring season.
