Spartanburg man convicted of assaulting woman
SPARTANBURG – A Spartanburg man has been convicted of assaulting a woman in a case that prompted the sheriff to recommend that women arm themselves.
Forty-six-year-old Walter Monroe Lance was sentenced Tuesday to 50 years in prison for assault with intent to rape, common law robbery and kidnapping.
A 49-year-old Spartanburg woman testified she was attacked by Lance while walking her dog at a park Oct. 30.
After the attack, Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright encouraged women to obtain concealed weapons permits to prevent attacks.
Wright suggested that women carry a .45-caliber weapon so accuracy would not be important. He also said it would be better for women to carry a gun rather than mace.
The sheriff encouraged women to walk in groups.
