Biden to visit here to raise cash for Obama’s re-election

Vice President Joe Biden will make his second trip to the Lowcountry in as many months as he arrives today for a private fundraiser.

The event will be held at a local home and ticket prices start at $10,000, a campaign official said. Proceeds will go to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee of Obama for America, the Democratic National Committee and several state Democratic parties.

The White House was expected to release details on the timing of his visit later Monday.

The event will be at the home of Mark Tanenbaum, a Charleston trial attorney and Democratic fundraiser.

There was no word on the potential impact on local traffic.

Biden visited Kiawah Island over Easter weekend, and his motorcade reportedly caused traffic backups along Interstate 26 and along other roads leading to Kiawah.

While most experts consider South Carolina a sure thing for Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney this fall, Charleston County voted for the Obama-Biden ticket in 2008.

Also, Charleston has a large number of donors who support Democrats. Last fall, Biden hosted a $35,800 per-plate fundraiser at Charleston Place, where 10 wealthy guests dined on steak and crab cakes.

Through April 30, Obama has raised about $364,609 in South Carolina — about $80,000 more than Romney, according to federal election filings.
