Car driven by 18-year-old, carrying children crashes into James Island house at high speed

An 18-year-old James Island man was arrested this morning after deputies said he was going “extremely too fast” on a residential street when he crashed his Buick into a house, then ran away, according to a report.

Charles Devin Jorudd of Wellington Drive faces charges of reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and violating his beginner’s driving permit.

Nobody, including two children inside Jorudd’s sedan, was seriously hurt after the 2005 Buick LaCrosse struck a corner of the home at 1149 Quail Drive about 1:38 a.m. The crash did about $50,000 in damage to the house and $10,000 to the car.

Jorudd’s mother arrived at the scene as deputies from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office investigated the wreck, according to Maj. Jim Brady, a sheriff’s spokesman. She told them that her son had returned home and said he had struck the house with the Buick.

Jorudd later told deputies that the car was reaching speeds of 85 mph when he lost control at a curve. Citing no particular reason, he told deputies that he then felt compelled to flee.

He did not appear impaired, deputies said in an incident report.

Two children who were in the vehicle also ran off, according to Brady. The 13-year-old and 16-year-old passengers do not face charges.

Jorudd was scheduled to appear for a bail hearing this morning.
