Traffic backs up in the northbound lanes of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge Tuesday afternoon.

Vice President Joe Biden left the Lowcountry in a motorcade of black SUVs but a major traffic jam remains on U.S. 17 in Mount Pleasant.

Biden, who visited Sullivan's Island for a $10,000-a-plate fundraiser this afternoon, headed back west on closed roadways about 4 p.m.

The northbound lanes of U.S. 17 were still packed an hour later as rush-hour traffic started to fill the roads. There is also a wreck in the southbound lanes of the Ravenel Bridge on the Mount Pleasant side.

Motorists also reported delays on Interstate 526 near Daniel Island.
