Cypress chef edged out for Beard’s Southeast award

Cypress chef Craig Deihl was one of five finalists for Best Chef Southeast in the 2012 James Beard Foundation Awards, but it didnít pan out at Monday nightís gala in New York City.

Deihl, who has been nominated twice, took a bow to two veteran Georgia chefs, in an unusual tie, with Linton Hopkins of Restaurant Eugene in Atlanta and Hugh Acheson of the Five and Ten in Athens winning.

The Best Chef Southeast category covers Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. It has been won by a Charleston chef in three of the past four years.
