The South Carolina Department of Transportation recently named TriCounty Link the Best Rural Public Transportation Provider of 2012.

The award was presented by Doug Frate, deputy secretary for mass transit at the 2012 Transportation Association of South Carolina conference.

TriCounty Link also was named Best Rural Provider in 2008 and 2010.

According to an SCDOT performance report, ridership of statewide transit companies averaged a 15.1 percent decrease over the past fiscal year.

TriCounty Link, however, has shown a 7.75 percent increase overall.

In addition to Best Transit System, the Link also took home three other distinguished awards.

William S. Hutto received the SCDOT Director’s Award, as well as a special award from the Transportation Association for his 16 years of leadership as executive director.

Bus operator Sharon Moody was named Driver of the Year for her quick- thinking action in help- ing to prevent a robbery and rescue the victim by bringing her on board the bus and calling the police.
