Department of Natural Resources volunteer accused of stealing gasoline from McClellanville reserve
A volunteer with the state Department of Natural Resources is accused of stealing more than 300 gallons of gasoline from agency gas pumps in McClellanville.
State Law Enforcement Division investigators have charged Charles Darren Arthur, 46, of McClellanville, with breach of trust with fraudulent intent.
Arthur is accused of stealing nearly 347 gallons of gas worth $1,148 while working as a volunteer at Santee Coastal Reserve on Santee Gun Club Road, according to an arrest affidavit. The thefts occurred between September and Feb. 22, SLED said.
Arthur is accused of abusing his access to the pumps to fill up his personal vehicle on numerous occasions, investigators said. During an internal investigation, he was caught on video filling up his vehicle four times and filling up his girlfriend’s car once, an affidavit stated.
Arthur was booked into the Charleston County jail on Tuesday and later released on a personal recognizance bond.
