Arts and crafts giant Hobby Lobby to open in Mount Pleasants Six Mile Marketplace
A national arts and crafts retailer is setting up shop in one of Mount Pleasant’s newest retail centers. Hobby Lobby said it will build a large, free-standing store in the Harris Teeter-anchored Six Mile Marketplace at Six Mile Road and U.S. Highway 17.
The company said it hopes to move in by the end of the year. The Oklahoma City-based retailer said its 55,000-square-foot store will create 35 to 50 jobs paying about $13 an hour for full-time workers and $9 for part-timers.
Hobby Lobby will be going head-to-head for business in the East Cooper area with another national arts and crafts chain — Michaels Stores has a large outlet about two miles south on Highway 17 in Wando Crossing Shopping Center. A representative for Michaels could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
According to its website, Hobby Lobby was started in 1970 as an offshoot of a miniature picture frame business in North Oklahoma City. It has since grown to more than 500 stores in 41 states.
The chain is privately owned.
The company’s Mount Pleasant store will mark its 12th location in South Carolina and its first along the coast. The 11 other locations are concentrated mostly in the Midlands and Upstate. The rest are in Aiken, Florence and Rock Hill.
Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. could not be reached Tuesday for comment about its decision to expand into the Charleston region. The company issued a written statement.
“As we continue to establish ourselves further in South Carolina as part of our nationwide expansion plan, we are excited to be part of another new community and share in the growth of both the city and the state,” said John Schumacher, assistant vice president of advertising. “At the same time, we look forward to giving customers an enriched shopping experience in the crafts and home décor market with exceptional service, selection and value,”
Hobby Lobby said its major sales categories include crafts, needleworking, picture framing, jewelry-making, fashion fabrics, floral goods, cards, baskets, wearable art, home accents, scrapboooking and holiday supplies.
