State Transport Police charge truck driver in Ravenel Bridge crash
Leslie O’Quinn of Ridgeville, the truck driver in the accident on the ramp from Interstate 26 east to the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, was charged today by the State Transport Police with multiple violations relating to the condition of the vehicle.
The 1990 Peterbilt tractor trailer violated safety rules for brake condition, and equipment on the truck was improperly secured. State Transport Police said they could find no record of having inspected the truck.
O’Quinn, 25, was also issued a citation for not having the truck inspected on an annual basis.
The Highway Patrol charged O’Quinn with driving too fast for conditions when the truck sideswiped a car, rear-ended a state truck and crashed into a police cruiser before coming to a stop on Monday morning.
The wreck left an ugly scene of twisted metal and clogged traffic, but no one was seriously injured.
Charleston Police Lt. Jason Emanuele said O’Quinn rounded the curve in the ramp going about 80 mph. Emergency vehicles blocked the road because they were called to assist with a disabled propane truck.
