Bishops top Andrews to gain District 7 baseball playoff victory

ANDREWS — Bishop England built a 9-0 lead and held on to knock off top seed Andrews 12-7 Saturday in a Class AA District 7 baseball playoff game.

The victory put the Bishops (16-10) in the driver’s seat for a berth in the Lower State Championship Series.

Andrews will host the winner of the Silver Bluff-Loris game on Monday. The winner of that game will travel to Bishop England on Wednesday, and the Bishops will need only one victory to advance in a bid for their sixth state title in 10 years.

The Bishops had a season-high 14 hits. Junior Zack Madden led the way with a 3-for-4 effort with two RBIs and a walk. Sophomore Taylor Oden had a pair of singles and three RBIs.

Cane Bay 6, Berkeley 5
Senior Ty Wilder’s two-run double gave Cane Bay a lead in the fourth inning and senior right-hander Zach Wimmer escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to send Cane Bay to a District 5 playoff win over Berkeley.

Cane Bay struck early with three runs on four hits, aided by an error, in the bottom of the first.

Berkeley got a run back on Garrett Gallagher’s solo home run to left, then scored four runs in the third, aided by an error, to take a 5-3 lead.

The Cobras cut the lead to 5-4 on Blaine Peck’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the third, but Berkeley centerfielder Eric Orton saved two runs with a diving catch on a line drive off the bat of Austin Timm.

Cane Bay took the lead for good on Wilder’s double down the left-field line in the fourth.

Hanahan 10, Waccamaw 2
Hanahan collected 12 hits to roll to roll past Waccamaw in the Class AA District 6 playoffs.

Skylar Hunter led the way with 2 hits in four at-bats, including a three-run homer.

Bret Hines went 2 for 4 with a double. Nick Zerbst was 2 for 3 with a double and RBI while Seth Lancaster was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Kyle Dyson struck out eight in five innings of work to up his record to 5-1. Hines pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

The Hawks are 18-7 and are off until Wednesday when they host the championship game.
