Wando defeats North Augusta in District 7 softball action

MOUNT PLEASANT —Wando is a win away from the District 7 championship and a berth in the Lower State softball championship series.

The Warriors picked up their 21st win of the season against six losses Saturday with a 5-3 decision over North Augusta.

North Augusta plays Fort Dorchester on Monday and the winner travels to Mount Pleasant on Wednesday with a tough task. The Warriors have to win only one of a possible two games to advance.

The Warriors collected eight hits as Brooke Gidert led the way with a 3-for-4 effort.

Summerville 13, South Florence 4
Everyone in the Green Wave lineup had a hit as Summerville earned a 13-4 win over South Florence in the Class AAAA softball playoffs.

Summerville now advances to host Wednesday’s District 8 championship series, where it will need only one win to advance to the next round. The Green Wave will face Goose Creek, South Aiken or South Florence.

Summerville (26-2) tallied 14 hits while holding South Florence (18-8) to five. Wave seniors Sarah Montei and Kaitlyn Clark were both 3 for 4 at the plate and sophomore Hannah Horton was 2 for 4. Montei scored four runs and Clark scored three and had three RBIs.

However, the Bruins did put runners on base. Lauren Burt was 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored and Summerville committed six fielding errors.

“We hit the ball today, but our defense wasn’t as solid as it normally is,” Summerville coach Heather Tucker said. “I’m proud of them for swinging the sticks and putting the ball in play to put pressure on South Florence.”

Sophomore Taylor Wuerfel went the distance in the circle to pick up the pitching win. She struck out four batters and only walked one.

The Bruins took their only lead of the game in the first inning after Summerville made consecutive errors and Burt drove in Jessie Sims with a single.

The Wave answered in the bottom of the frame by scoring four runs. Three of them came off Taylor Belfiore’s bases-loaded double.

The Bruins had a little rally in the second to cut the lead to 6-4, but the rest of the game belonged to Summerville.

The Wave added three runs in the third and four in the fifth. Clark had a two-run single in the third and a two-run double in the fifth.
