MOUNT PLEASANT--The Wando softball team is a win away from the District 7 championship and a berth in the Lower State Champiosnhip Series.

The Warriors picked up their 21st win of the season against six losses Saturday with a 5-3 decision over North Augusta, which fell to 22-4.

North Augusta plays Fort Dorchester Monday and the winner travels to Mount Pleasant on Wednesday with a tough task. The Warriors have to win only one of a possible two games to advance.

Danica Newton improved to 17-4 by scattering seven hits and striking out five.

The Warriors collected eight hits with Brooke Gidert leading the way with a 3-for-4 effort and an RBI.

The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the first when Virginia Moore and Gidert singled, and advanced on stolen bases. Nikki Pellegrini blasted a double to score both runs.
