Rep. Tim Scott to host May 31 entrepreneurship conference

U.S. Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C., will sponsor a Conference on Entrepreneurship in Washington, D.C., next month to try to find solutions that will create more jobs.

“Job creators in this country are not interested in partisan squabbling or the politics of division,” he said. “They want their government to reform the tax code and streamline the regulatory burden so that their ideas, initiative, and energy can be unshackled.”

The May 31 event is expected to feature Priceline.com founder Jay Walker, Honeywell CEO Dave Cote and others who will be announced in coming weeks.

Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, also will participate, as will Stephen Moore of The Wall Street Journal.

Scott’s interest in entrepreneurship is spurred in part by his former mentor, the late John Moniz, who owned a Chick-fil-A restaurant and encouraged Scott to discover his own values.

Nick Muzin, Scott’s national political director, called the conference a one-of-a-kind event that will connect some of the county’s most prominent CEOs and leading lawmakers.

“This conference has the potential to change the conversation in Washington, letting the job creators drive the agenda, with the goal of making government itself more entrepreneurial,” Muzin said.

Scott said the discussions will allow business leaders to have meaningful input into the important economic choices facing the nation.

“In the end, I think it’s critically important for us to start the process of engaging the business community and the public about the ramifications of action in inaction,” he said.
