The finished room over the garage makes for a cozy contrast to the open first floor of one semi-custom house in Grassy Creek.
But it begs the question: what’s behind door # 2?
Okay, there’s not really a ‘door #2.’ But there is a second door upstairs at 272 Marsh Ibis Trail. And the hinged piece of wood conceals much more than a closet or an air conditioning unit. There’s a recreation room converted into a gym; a large sofa and chairs; two bedrooms with dormer windows; and a full bath. Truth be told, there’s also closet space, lots of it.
Built in 2004, the 3,320-square-foot residence is for sale for $700,000.
The sprawling upstairs “is set up so teens and guests can have privacy,” says Mary Ann Seamon, listing agent with Keller Williams Realty. To save on the power bill, the area can closed off when no one is there.
While an innovative feature, the hideaway upper floor is by no means the only standout attraction. Seamon says the Mount Pleasant home has a “great floor plan for entertaining.”
The owners, Lee and Craig Schuermann, designed and constructed the house with a host of perks. Noticeable right off is large yard, more than 2/5th of an acre. The “meticulously care-for” lawn, Seamon says, provides a lush natural carpet. Edging the yard are a full-length deck and a driveway leading to the two-car garage.
In back are more highlights: Deck furniture conveys with the curvy-shaped gunite swimming pool, which is between the back porch and additional lawn. A natural fence along marsh rims the backyard and includes two tall evergreens that Lee Schuermann calls “the Christmas trees.”
For the most part, the living quarters are on the first level. Off the entrance to the house is a formal dining room with twin columns and elegant crown and base moldings. The open dining room is across a hallway from the ample family room, which showcases a gas-log fireplace, TV cabinet and book shelves on either side. French doors lead to the backyard.
The family area also opens to a bright breakfast room and upscale kitchen. Granite counterops, double-bowl sink, pantry and stainless steel refrigerator, double oven, dishwasher and microwave accentuate the cooking area, which is also accessible from the hallway.
On one wing of the house is the master suite. A large bedroom is flanked by a sitting room that opens to the brick porch and a good-sized bathroom with garden tub, shower, double sinks, travertine floors and a walk-in closet. The opposite wing has a laundry room with sink and cabinets, a sizable bedroom facing the back yard, smaller room now used as an office and a full bath. A powder room is also on the first floor.
The centralized stairs lead to the spacious bonus room, which can be a game area.
Maple floors are found everywhere except for the carpet in the bedrooms and finished room over the garage, tile in baths and laundry room and pre-finished Brazilian cherry floors upstairs. The second floor bedrooms have plenty of space, and the bathroom in between sports fine cabinetry. Ceilings are nine foot, and fixtures around the house are oil-rubbed bronze. Another perk is three-zoned heating and cooling.
Grassy Creek, located west of Belle Hall Plantation, is a removed yet sociable neighborhood with a crabbing dock and pavilion.
The 272 Marsh Ibis Trail residence is in a convenient location near Interstate 526 and Long Point Road, which has plenty of shops and stores, Seamon says. The house has been on the market since August, with quite a bit of interest.
“The people who have older kids loved it,” Lee Schuermann says. The couple customized the house so that “everybody had enough space,” she says. “That was the whole purpose.”
From the Ravenel Bridge, stay left on U.S. Highway 17 North, then take the second left onto Mathis Ferry Road. Follow Mathis Ferry to Whipple Road. Bear left on Whipple and travel to Long Point Road. Turn left on Long Point and make a right on Belle Hall Parkway. Take the first left on Seacoast Parkway. Turn right on Shoals Drive, continue to River Oak Drive and turn left. Make a right on Marsh Ibis Trail, and 272 Marsh Ibis is on the right.
