City Building Inspection Division employee Antonio Leroy Rutledge charged with embezzlement

A City of Charleston employee was arrested Wednesday by police who maintain he diverted about $4,000 in city funds to his own use.

Antonio Leroy Rutledge, 29, of Lowell Drive, North Charleston, is charged by Charleston police with embezzlement of public funds. The crime took place between Jan. and April 11, 2012, while Rutledge was employed by the city's Building Inspection Division, police spokesman Charles Francis said.

Rutledge is being held at the Cannon Detention Center. He is scheduled to have a bond hearing at 2 p.m. Thursday, Francis said.
