BOWMAN COLUMN: Lowcountry well respresnted in Clas of the Carolinas
The 2012 SC United FC Clash of the Carolinas, the only interstate all-star soccer match in the country, will be held July 7 at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island.
The Lowcountry will be well represented in the games, which pit the top senior players from South Carolina against their counterparts from North Carolina.
Local selections for the South Carolina boys team include: Hunter Greer, Wando (GK); Joe Amon, Summerville (D); Brian Byrne, Bishop England (F); Wesley Eads, Fort Dorchester (F); Devin L’Amoreaux, Fort Dorchester (F); Davis Michaelsen, Academic Magnet (M); and Trent Rieflin, Wando (D).
Local selections for the South Carolina girls team include: Emily Gossen, Academic Magnet (GK); Nora Bishop, Wando (F); Taylor Coleman, West Ashley (D); and Paige Urig, Wando (D).
White to SMC
Matt White, one of top two-sport stars in the state, will continue his baseball career at Spartanburg Methodist College.
White, who plays middle infield and outfield, was an All-Lowcountry slection in baseball last spring.
He also was an outstanding football player, earning first-team All-Lowcountry honors his junior and senior years. He led the state in interceptions his junior year and was picked to play in the Shrine Bowl last fall.
Wando volleyball standout Erin Courtenay signed a scholarship to Limestone College for volleyball.
She was a three-year starter and earned all-region and All-Lowcountry honors. She also served as a captain for coach Alexis Glover’s squad.
Savannah Miller, meanwhile, will be a preferred walk-on at Clemson. She was an all-region and All-Lowcountry selection and played in the North-South All-Star Game.
Barwick to Tusculum
Florence-Darlington Tech catcher Brad Barwick made a commitment to play baseball at Tusculum College in Tennessee. Barwick played high school baseball at Berkeley.
