Clemson edges Maryland in baseball, 5-4

Clemson 5, Maryland 4
COLLEGE PARK, MD. — Richie Shaffer’s two-out, two-run triple in the ninth inning gave Clemson the lead and the Tigers held on for a 5-4 victory Friday night.

The Tigers (22-17, 10-9 ACC) led 3-0 before the Terrapins (25-15, 7-12) rallied for three runs in the eighth to tie the game.

In the ninth, Jason Stolz reached on an infield single with one out. Two batters later, Thomas Brittle drew a walk, then Shaffer crushed an opposite-field triple to the wall in right field.

Maryland got one run in the ninth on a solo homer by Jordan Hagel.

Scott Firth (4-0) got the win in relief despite allonwing four runs in two innings. Starter Kevin Brady struck out eight in seven scoreless innings for the Tigers.

The teams play a doubleheader today starting at 11 a.m.
