Charleston Southern outguns Savannah State, 11-7, in baseball

Charleston Southern pounded out 17 hits, including three home runs, in an 11-7 win over Savannah State in baseball Wednesday at CSU Ballpark.

Walt Quattlebaum had three hits and two RBIs for the Buccaneers (15-25), while four other CSU players had two hits and two RBIs apiece.

Brennan Dorsett (1-0) went five innings for the win, while Corey Deighan came in with two runners on in the ninth to strike out the side and record his fourth save.

The Tigers (13-24) took a 1-0 lead in the first, but CSU took the lead for good in the second with a solo home run from Blake Hunt and a two-run shot from Bobby Ison, who hit his first career homer.

The Bucs padded their lead to 9-1 with five runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Harrison Wilkins, an RBI infield single by John Faircloth and RBI singles by Quattlebaum, Robbie Streett and Hunt.

Savannah State scored three in the fifth and three more in the eighth to cut the gap to 9-7.

But CSU scored twice in the bottom of the eighth on a home run by Faircloth and an RBI single by Streett.

Zach Hagaman began the top of the ninth on the mound for the Bucs, but back-to-back singles from Savannah State would bring on Deighan to close it out.

Each starter had at least one hit for Charleston Southern.

The Buccaneers are next at Presbyterian at 3 p.m. Friday.
