Clemson men’s basketball fills assistant vacancy with Virginia Tech’s James Johnson

CLEMSON — Clemson men’s basketball has filled its assistant coaching vacancy with Virginia Tech assistant James Johnson, a source confirmed Friday afternoon.

Johnson was the top assistant for Hokies coach Seth Greenberg and is regarded as an excellent recruiter.

Greenberg declined to comment on the reports when reached by The Post and Courier on Friday. Clemson has not yet planned an official announcement.

Johnson spent one year one as an assistant at the College of Charleston in 2003.

Johnson was on the George Mason staff when the program advanced to the Final Four in 2006.

Clemson had a position to fill on its staff after associate head coach Rick Ray left to become the head coach at Mississippi State earlier this month.

Clemson coach Brad Brownell also considered College of Charleston Mark Byington for the position.

Fishing
A meeting will be held today at the Capital City/Lake Murray Country office to discuss making a request to the South Carolina High School League to sanction high school fishing as a varsity sport.

The meeting will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Capital City/Lake Murray Country office, located at 2184 North Lake Drive, Columbia.

The meeting is in preparation for the South Carolina High School Fishing State Championship, which will be held April 28 in partnership with The Bass Federation and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

Participants are invited following the meeting to attend the 2:30 p.m. weigh-in for the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Tennis
In its Southern Conference regularseason finale, the College of Charleston women’s tennis team handed Georgia Southern a 7-0 shutout on Senior Day at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (21-5, 9-1) swept all of the singles and doubles matches against the Eagles (5-14, 2-8 SoCon) in a day honoring seniors Katie Lee and Caroline Newman.

Charleston has clinched the No. 2 seed in the SoCon Tennis Championships to be held at The Citadel on April 19-22.

CofC will host East Carolina for USTA Kids Day in one final non-conference tuneup prior to the SoCon Tournament today at 10 a.m. at the CofC Tennis Center.

A free youth clinic and tailgate will follow at approximately 1 p.m.

The College of Charleston men’s team suffered its first SoCon loss of the season at Appalachian State, 5-2.

The Cougars (14-4, 8-1) were two matches away from matching their first-ever perfect SoCon season. However, they still remain in the hunt for the top seed in next week’s SoCon Tennis Championships to be held on April 19-22.

Softball
Jennifer Giles struck out two over two shutout innings of relief, and Charleston Southern pushed across a sixth-inning run to salvage a doubleheader split with a 1-0 win over Campbell at Buccaneer Field.

Kristin Kelleher was 2for2 with a pair of walks for the Bucs (24-19, 9-5 Big South).

CSU got sevenstrong innings from Morgan Dowdy (14-10) in the front end of the twinbill, but could not muster enough offense in a 2-1 loss.

The series concludes with a 2 p.m. game today.
