Officials ID body near Columbia homeless camp
COLUMBIA – Richland County authorities have identified a second body found close to an abandoned homeless camp near Columbia.
Coroner Gary Watts said Friday the badly decomposed body found in some woods was that of 24-year-old Rachel Marie Goodnight. Watts used dental X-rays to identify the remains.
Goodnight was last seen March 28 near the location where her body was found Thursday. Watts says the woman died from a blow to the head.
Columbia police are investigating the death.
The body of 51-year-old Richard Kinsley, Jr., was found last week in the same area. He had died from head and neck injuries when he was attacked.
Peter Edward Chalers is charged with accessory after the fact of murder in Kinsley’s death. Forty-one-year-old Lawrence Stevens is charged with providing false information to police.
