Clemson speaks with College of Charleston’s Byington about coaching position

CLEMSON – Clemson coach Brad Brownell told The Post and Courier Tuesday he has spoken with College of Charleston assistant coach Mark Byington about the vacant assistant coaching position at Clemson.

Byington was C of C’s interim head coach this past season during Bobby Cremins’ medical leave of absence. The Cougars hired Doug Wojcik as its new head coach last month.

Byington played at UNC-Wilmington when Brownell was an assistant at the school. Byington was a three-year starter and graduated in 1998.

“He’s a smart guy,” Brownell said. “Tough guy. Played hard. He could really shoot the ball, he was a good teammate. I remember he came in by himself, he was actually recruited by the previous staff, and he stayed at UNC-Wilmington with us and he had a very good career. He was just a guy who came in and worked.”

Byington told The Post and Courier he has been offered a job by Wojcik to remain at C of C.

“I can’t go wrong with staying here or if something worked out at Clemson or somewhere else,” Byington said. “Clemson would be a great opportunity for anyone that gets that job.

“I have a lot to consider.”
Brownell said he has talked to other candidates about the position and did not place a timetable on when he would fill the position.

Clemson’s top assistant Rick Ray left to take the head coaching job at Mississippi State earlier this month. Ray was Brownell’s top assistant but Brownell declined to say whether he will hire a new associated head coach or promote internally.
