Downtown fabric and quilt shop unraveling after 13 years

People, Places and Quilts, which has occupied a 1,200-square-foot fabric and quilt shop at 1 Henrietta St. in downtown Charleston for 13 years, will close April 30.

Owner Diane Frankenberger decided to close because the building is on the market and may be sold.

She also has a 6,000-square-foot shop at 129 W. Richardson St. in Summerville, which has been in business for 23 years and will remain open.

Among those from the Charleston area on the list are Bob Ellis Shoes, Christophe Chocolatier, Charleston Bloody Mary Mix, Gabrielle metal cast lace jewelry and Heirloom Book Company.

Charity sale
Belk’s semi-annual Charity Sale will take place April 21.

The four-hour event for the Charlotte-based department store chain allows customers to buy a $5 ticket from a local charity or its stores.

Proceeds from ticket sales go to nonprofits and schools, and shoppers can use the tickets to receive discounts from 6-10 a.m. that day in the store. Tickets go on sale in all Belk stores on Friday.

Last year’s spring and fall events raised more than $10 million for hundreds of participating charities across the company’s 16-state market area.

On the morning of the Charity Sale, the first 100 customers to arrive at each store will receive a Belk gift card ranging in value from $5 to $100.

To participate, charity representatives should contact their local Belk store manager.
