Charges made against man accused of trying to run over deputy

A bedside bond hearing was held Friday for a man who was shot and wounded last week while allegedly trying to run his car into a deputy.

Terrance Alexzander Green, 21, of Sam Rittenburg Boulevard has been at Medical University Hospital since he was wounded April 2 in West Ashley. At a hearing at the hospital, Magistrate Alvin Bligen set a $100,000 surety bond on an attempted murder charge lodged against Green, Charleston County Sheriff’s office Maj. Jim Brady said Monday.

He said Green is also charged with reckless driving and third-offense driving under suspension. Bails totaling $2,550 have been set on the traffic charges.

The sheriff’s office has said Deputy Shawn James pulled a red sedan Green was driving over about 2 p.m., and after James was out of his cruiser, the sedan charged James. James fired 11 shots into the sedan. Two of the shots wounded Green, the sheriff’s office said.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.

The warrant states that Green was driving “in a reckless manner, nearly striking several vehicles” before James pulled him over. Both the deputy and Green were in a parking lot at 1322 Ashley River Road, where -- according to the warrant -- Green put his car in reverse and tried to leave.

James drew his weapon and ordered the driver to stop and park. “The driver placed the vehicle in drive and accelerated forward toward James in rapid fashion, nearly striking” him, the warrant states.

James, “fearing for his life,” according to the warrant, fired at the car, which continued onto Ashley River Road, headed toward Sam Ritterberg Boulevard, in spite of shattered window glass and injuries to the driver.

Green was arrested about 15 minutes after the shooting, trying to trade his clothes for some on a clothesline behind a Juniper Street home, the Sheriff’s Office said.
