Man shot driving car at Romney and Meeting

Charleston city police are investigating the shooting of a black male found around 5:15 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Romney and Meeting streets.

He was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, according to police spokesman Charles Francis.

The victim was driving a car when he was shot. Two passengers were with him. The vehicle was stopped at the traffic light on Romney Street at Meeting Street when a car came up from behind and someone in that vehicle fired several shots, police said.

The victim was the only one who was wounded. He was taken to MUSC apparently with non-life-threatening injuries.

No suspects were immediately named.

Death of Summerville man ruled homicide

SUMMERVILLE — The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office identified a man found dead in his home at 107 Hope Drive on Friday as Johnny Young Jr., 38. The case has been ruled a homicide.

The Sheriff’s Office did not respond Saturday to a request for an update on the case.

Coroner Chris Nesbit said Saturday that Young was hit three times by gunfire.

Young’s body was found Friday morning. A window in a back door had been broken but officials wouldn’t confirm whether the rental home had been burglarized before the killing.

A family member had called 911 reporting the man had suffered stab wounds and wasn’t breathing.

Man tells police he shot 2 dead during break-in

SPARTANBURG — Authorities said two men are dead after a man said he shot them as they tried to break into his Spartanburg County apartment.

Deputies said the man was returning home around 12:10 a.m. Saturday when he fired on the men.

Investigators said the gunshot victims were found behind air conditioners at the complex. Deputies said one had a ski mask on his head.

Authorities said 22-year-old Michael Gentry-Hill Jr. died at the scene, and 18-year-old Darren Hill died a short time later at the hospital.

No charges have been filed, and deputies continue to investigate the shooting.

Oconee nuclear reactor shut down for leak

SALEM — One of the three nuclear reactors at Oconee Nuclear Station has been shut down.

Authorities said a small leak in a nonradioactive cooling system forced engineers to power down the reactor Friday morning as a precaution.

Officials said the leak was contained to the reactor and there no threat to the public. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was notified.

A report from the NRC shows just one of the three reactors was operating at full power Friday. Officials said a second reactor is at reduced power as officials get ready to refuel it.

General retiring after Fort Jackson revamp
FORT JACKSON — The two-star general in charge of the Army’s largest training base is departing military life after overseeing the start of a $1 billion building boom and the most intensive revamp of training in decades.

Maj. Gen. James Milano hands over command Tuesday at the installation in Columbia. During his tenure, major changes have taken place in what recruits eat, how they train for combat and which physical tests they must undergo.

Milano said that even as soldiers have shipped out to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the training has remained tough and rigorous.

Milano said even more change is in store as the Army cuts its numbers over the next six years, but he is confident the service will adapt.
