Brittles big day clinches second straight series win for Clemson
College of Charleston transfer Thomas Brittle had a monster day for Clemson in an 11-5 win at Duke on Saturday, helping Clemson clinch its second straight series win.
Brittle went 4 for 6 at the plate with 5 RBIs, including a three-run double in the ninth to give Clemson some breathing room. Clemson entered the inning with a one-run lead.
Brittle is evidently over a deep cut to his throwing hand which required stitches and caused the center fielder to miss last weekend’s series versus Miami. Richie Shaffer added three hits for Clemson which has climbed back to .500 in ACC play at 17-14 overall and 7-7 in the conference.
Duke fell to 13-19 overall and 5-9 in ACC play.
Clemson starting pitcher Dominic Leone continued to show signs of coming out of his early season slump, striking out nine batters over 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits but only walking two batters. Leone has been struggling with his command early in the season so his improved control Saturday is encouraging to Clemson.
Leone has trimmed his ERA from 6.08 entering last weekend to 5.17.
