Mount Pleasant elementary, middle students could be assigned to new schools
Mount Pleasant elementary and middle school children could be assigned to different schools for the 2013-14 school year, but parents still have plenty of time to weigh in on those decisions.
District officials say they need to address the overcrowded schools in the high-growth part of the county by redrawing attendance lines. The District 2 (Mount Pleasant) constituent school board, which is charged with deciding school zones, has been meeting to discuss the problem.
“We’ve just been avoiding it as long as we could, and we no longer can do that,” said Marty Belk, chairwoman of the constituent school board. “You can never satisfy everyone, and it’s very, very difficult.”
Communities become attached to their schools and no one wants to make a change, but some schools, such as those in Park West, are so over-crowded that the issue must be addressed, she said. She couldn’t say yet whether it will involve all schools in Mount Pleasant or just a few.
