Crews return to West Ashley church in missing woman case
Crews again searched a wooded area this morning near a church on Ashley River Road in the case of missing mother Gayle McCaffrey of West Ashley.
The deputies and crime-scene experts were at St. Phillip AME Church at 2861 Ashley River Road, which is just east of Bees Ferry Road. The area is within a half-mile from the woman’s house.
The crews were at the same site March 27 but found nothing. They were not acting on any particular tip.
Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Watson said multiple searches are going on near the church and along Bees Ferry Road. They again are not acting on a tip and are “just looking for clues,” Watson said.
McCaffrey went missing sometime March 17, when her husband left their Limestone Boulevard house after the couple argued.
Bob McCaffrey said he returned home the next morning after a quick trip Upstate. Their two children were alone and his wife’s wedding ring and Jeep were left behind. A typed note said she had left, possibly to be with another man.
The 36-year-old woman, a longtime Baptist and Citadel employee, hasn’t been heard from since.
No one has been charged in the disappearance, though investigators said they had developed a “specific person of interest.”
But that person’s name has not been released.
