Man, 84, arrested on felony DUI charge after crash with motorcylist
An 84-year-old Charleston man faces a felony DUI charge after his SUV crashed into a stopped motorcycle Sunday night in West Ashley, according to police reports.
Joseph Patrick Howe of Lochaven Drive was arrested after the crash about 11:20 p.m. at Glenn McConnell Parkway and Magwood Drive.
The Charleston Police Department said Howe's Saturn Vue had a green arrow to go northbound on Glenn McConnell Parkway from Magwood Drive. Instead, the SUV turned into oncoming traffic on southbound Glenn McConnell and crashed into a Honda motorcyle stopped for the traffic light.
The police estimated that Howe's SUV was traveling at 20 mph.
The motorcyclist, 29-year-old John Christopher Garon of Charleston, suffered several pelvic fractures, according to a crash report. He was takent to Medical University Hospital, where he was in serious condition.
Howe wasn't hurt.
Officers said in an incident report that Howe's blood-alcohol level was 0.13. He was jailed at the Charleston County Detention Center.
