South Carolina Stingrays forward Billy Ryan called up to American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears

South Carolina Stingrays forward Billy Ryan has been called up to the Hershey Bears, of the American Hockey League.

Ryan, 26, played in 12 games with the Stingrays this season scoring nine goals and three assists for 12 points.

The Milton, Mass. native joined the Stingrays after appearing in three games with the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters, recording one assist.

A third-round draft pick (80th overall) by the New York Rangers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Ryan saw ECHL action with the Wheeling Nailers during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons totaling 34 points (15 goals, 19 assists) in 34 games.

“Billy is a tremendous offensive player and will be missed this weekend,” said Stingrays coach Spencer Carbery. “This gives some other guys an opportunity to step up for us.”

The Stingrays open up a crucial two-game home-and-away series Friday night in Greenville against the Road Warriors. The Stingrays need two wins to secure a spot in the ECHL’s Kelly Cup playoffs.
