Grubauer out for the season
South Carolina Stingrays rookie goalie Philipp Grubauer is scheduled to have wrist surgery this week and will miss the rest of the season and next month's Kelly Cup playoffs.
"Philipp has been a huge part of this team all season," said Stingrays head coach Spencer Cabery. "Philipp probably belonged at a higher level this season, but came to South Carolina with a great attitude and worked hard every day in practice. He will be missed."
Grubauer, a 4th-round pick of the Washington Capitals in 2010, is 23-13-5 this season with the Stingrays with a 2.22 goal against average and a .918 save percentage. Grubauer was named the ECHL rookie of the month in January and the goalie of the month in November.
Billy Sauer will make his fifth straight start tonight against the Florida Everblades. Daren Machesney, who has missed the last two months with a groin injury, is expected to be back in the lineup this week.
