Boeing donates $248K to planned African American museum
The International African American Museum planned for Charleston has received a $248,000 grant from Boeing toward the project, officials said today.
The grant will support program-development, allowing the museum to work with educational and cultural organizations in the Lowcountry in producing exhibitions and educational offerings.
The museum, planned for near Calhoun and Concord streets by the Cooper River, is dedicated to telling the story of the black experience from an international perspective. A focal point will be a plaza called "Arrival Square" marking where thousands of slaves set foot into North America.
Historians believe as many as 40 percent of all enslaved Africans came through Charleston. The museum is still in the planning phase, and construction is still some time away.
