House holds hearing on Eisenhower Memorial design
WASHINGTON — Susan Eisenhower, the 34th president’s granddaughter, is expected to testify before a House subcommittee on national parks to object to designs for a Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial in Washington.
During a hearing Tuesday, officials from the National Park Service and Eisenhower Memorial Commission also are set to testify, along with interested groups. The memorial commission hired prominent architect Frank Gehry to design the memorial near the National Mall.
Gehry proposes a memorial park framed by large metal tapestries depicting Eisenhower’s boyhood home in Kansas. Two large carved stones would depict Ike as president and as World War II hero. A statue of a young Eisenhower would appear to marvel at what his life became.
Susan Eisenhower says the design focuses too much on Eisenhower’s humble roots, instead of his accomplishments.
