WISE COLUMN: Mt. Pleasant Bi-Lo renovated
Bi-Lo will unveil its updated Mount Pleasant store at 1909 U.S. Highway 17 near the Isle of Palms connector with a grand reopening at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The enhanced departments in the store will showcase improved freshness, variety and quality.
Rick Gonzalez is manager of the renovated store, which added 14 jobs.
As part of the event, Bi-Lo Charities also will make a donation of more than $6,700 to five local nonprofit groups. They include Drayton Hall Elementary, Eagle Harbor Boys Ranch, Knightsville Family Worship Center, East Cooper Meals On Wheels and Roscoe Reading Program. Bi-Lo Regional Vice President Rusty Streetman and other dignitaries will be on hand.
In addition, the supermarket chain's signature vehicle will visit the store 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday with games and giveaways. Customers can receive free glucose and cholesterol screening 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 30.
The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will be there 11 a.m.-5 p.m. March 29, and the Johnsonville Big Taste Grill will stop by 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 1 for a charity event.
Ice, ice, baby
Tuesday is the first day of spring, so it's time for Rita's Italian Ice free ice giveaway.
Customers can stop by noon-8 p.m. for one free regular-size Italian ice at 9770 Dorchester Road in Summerville and 4958 Centre Pointe Drive in North Charleston. The stores are owned by Jennie and Mark Davis.
Lights out
Rev's Smokehouse, which opened last June at 9730 Dorchester Road in Summerville, has closed. The phone is no longer in service. Ditto for Koi Asian Cafe at 372 E. 5th North St., also in Summerville.
Palate perch
The march of businesses to Upper King Street in downtown Charleston continues with the announcement that a recently launched magazine will move from Broad Street. Peninsula Publishing, which launched The Local Palate last year, has signed a one-year lease for 3,600 square feet on the upper floors of the Bluestein Building at 496 King St., according to Susan Lucas of King Street Marketing Group. It has an option to renew as well. The magazine was previously at 38 Broad St. in Charleston.
