Charleston is among the "10 Tastiest Towns in the South," based on more than half a million votes cast in a Southern Living magazine contest.

Lafayette, La., received the most votes, but Charleston came in fourth and the magazine heralded its homegrown heirloom revival.

Southern Living editors chose the Top 10 "Tastiest Towns in the South" based on food or ethnicity that defines a region, influence of the culinary industry on local the community and tourism, diversity of cuisine at various prices, local and sustainable food practices, chefs on the rise and buzz-worthy food festivals.

Other recognized cities, in descending order of votes, are Louisville, Ky.; New Orleans; Charlottesville, Va.; Houston; Birmingham, Ala.; Decatur, Ga.; Baltimore, Md.; and Raleigh, N.C.

Each city will be profiled in the April issue of the magazine, which hits newsstands March 23.
