JK Harris former CEO arrested for contempt of court
John K. Harris, the former CEO of nationwide tax firm JK Harris & Co., was arrested Sunday on a warrant for contempt of court.
Goose Creek-based JK Harris filed for bankruptcy protection last year to pre-empt an effort by the Texas attorney general to force the company into receivership. After failing to sell or reorganize, the business closed its remaining offices in late December, putting more than 100 local employees out of work.
Harris, 58, was arrested by Berkeley County Sheriff's Office deputies, then turned over to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, according to booking documents. He remained jailed this morning without bond at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.
He was ordered to go before a Master-in-Equity, but no further information about the contempt charge was immediately available.
At the time of the shutdown, the company had thousands of clients, many of whom were counting on the firm to help them resolve problems with the Internal Revenue Service. For a fee, typically several thousand dollars, the company offered to help clients pursue IRS settlements.
