Shipping firm adds new service to S. Africa
New Jersey ocean freight consolidator CaroTrans has started offering a weekly service from Charleston to South Africa, which means more container shipping business for the Port of Charleston.
CaroTrans works with businesses that have shipments too small to fill a container, and consolidates such cargo into container-loads shipped on existing vessel services. The company previously offered its South Africa service from New York, but moved the operation to North Charleston, according to the SPA.
CaroTrans is consolidating exports originating from Dallas, Houston, Miami, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Memphis, and Savannah, at its new Charleston location.
"With this new Charleston to South Africa LCL (less-than-containerload) service, we eliminate the long inland trip to New York providing a faster overall transit for our customers in the U.S. Southeast and Southwest," said Mark Stowell, CaroTrans, Charleston Branch Manager.
