Clemson third baseman Richie Shaffer could miss USC series
CLEMSON -- Clemson could be without slugging third baseman Richie Shaffer for its rivalry series with South Carolina this weekend.
Clemson coach Jack Leggett said Tuesday that Shaffer was questionable for the South Carolina series, saying Shaffer's status is "50-50 ... or a little worse" after Shaffer sustained a strained groin Sunday against Maine. Shaffer led the team in most offensive categories last season and is batting .364 with two home runs and eight RBIs through six games this season. Shaffer is projected as a potential early round pick in June's baseball draft.
If Shaffer can't play, Leggett said freshman Jay Baum would start at third.
Leggett also announced right-handed pitcher Kevin Brady would start the series opener at 6 p.m. Friday at Riley Park and Dominic Leone will start Saturday in Columbia. Sunday's starting pitcher has not been determined.
