Prescribed fire planned for Thursday in Berkeley County
Smoke billowing from southern Berkeley County on Thursday will come from a prescribed burn in the timberlands of the Joint Base Charleston Weapons Station.
The woodlands are between the city of Goose Creek and Bushy Park industrial area. Smoke may be visible from North Rhett Avenue, Red Bank Road, Bushy Park Road and the Don Holt Bridge on Interstate 526.
A prescribed fire is not a wildfire. It is a managed burn, conducted by trained natural resources professionals. These fires are coordinated with the South Carolina Forestry Commission and with federal and municipal fire departments.
A prescribed fire is conducted to prevent wildfires by reducing natural fuel loads present in the woods, manage for timber and wildlife habitat enhancement, encourage ecosystem restoration and management, and to suppress forest diseases and pests.
Please do not call 911 or the local fire departments to report these fires. The Joint Base Charleston Emergency Dispatcher can confirm authorized burning activity at 764-7555.
For additional information on prescribed burning call Joint Base Charleston Natural Resources Office at 764-7951.
