Hanahan Middle School recently won the Southeast regional round of the Lexus Eco Challenge, securing the team a spot at nationals to compete against fifteen other schools for a $25,000 prize.
This year's Eco Challenge marks Hanahan's third year in a row making it to the national level.
Team members include Murray Burn, Parker Futrell, Adeline Nguyen, Anna Sieger, Madeline Vick, Johnna Wallace, Katelyn Wilson, Brittany Young, and Jessica Young with Alexandra Davis serving as their teacher sponsor.
The students' national project will explore local foods, including having built a greenhouse on campus where they plant vegetables and herbs.
Hanahan will also host a Food Truck Roundup on Feb. 24 from 5-7 p.m. Trucks include Taco Boy, Strada Cucina, and Pot Kettle Black. Students will sell tomato seedlings from their greenhouse to help raise funds for the project. All proceeds go towards the greenhouse and the Hunger Ends Now Project.
