Fire extinguished at Johns Island barn with ammunition, boat inside
Firefighters doused a burning barn containing ammunition this morning on Johns Island.
The call came in around 10:40 a.m. at 3078 Murraywood Road.
Capt. James Ghi of the St. Johns Fire Department said crews took a defensive stance and started spraying water on the fully engulfed barn because the owner reported that guns and ammunition were inside.
No explosions were reported, however.
Firefighters controlled the blaze in about 20 minutes. It destroyed a boat and several vehicles. The barn's roof collapsed.
"The property owner suffered a pretty devastating loss here," Ghi said. "But we knew there were no people in there. Safety is our main concern."
No one was hurt. The cause of the blaze wasn't immediately known.
